2017 iDoYoga Festival
This FREE community event is open to the general public, and will be providing family-friendly activities. Our theme for 2017 will be: “Yoga as Lifestyle Medicine”, and will provide yoga classes and presentations on healthy eating, movement and relaxation. This year, we are expanding our program to include an optional all day (fee-based) CME Seminar for physicians, students and healthcare professionals, which will be led by Sat Bir S. Khalsa, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
What is Lifestyle Medicine?
According to the World Health Organization, by 2020, two-thirds of all diseases will be lifestyle-based. The emerging field of ‘Lifestyle Medicine’ focuses on non-communicable forms of chronic disease, including: diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, depression, anxiety, osteoarthritis, among others. Chronic disease is now responsible for up to 80% of all health care expenditures, yet most health care professionals treat chronic disease the same way they treat communicable disease, with pills and injections. This is not a surprise, given that most medical schools are not prepared to train physicians to advise patients on lifestyle-related choices.
Call to Action for a Healthy Future
The daily choices we make in life can greatly impact our current and future state of health. Yoga, in its many forms, can serve as a simple guide to help create health-based habits by encouraging individuals to take greater responsibility for their own health, and making more enlightened choices in everyday living.
Our goal is to begin discussions at the local level, on how forming healthy lifestyles can serve as a simple form of preventive medicine, and to empower individuals to learn about new and fun ways to be physically active, eat healthy and get adequate rest.
All proceeds from this event will go to two local 501(c)3 non-profits: Yoga Day Foundation and Yoga Seva Institute. Funds will be used to provide free yoga classes to children, women and underserved community members in San Antonio.
We hope you will join us on Saturday, June 17th 2017
